On behalf of the editorial team, I place on record our condolencences on the sad demise of Prof. Kakarla Subba Rao, Chairman, KIMS Foundation and Research Centre (KFRC), and Founder editor, Journal of Medical and Scientific Research (JMSR). He breathed his last on 16th April 2021 at the age of 96, leaving behind a legacy of large number of dedicated students and professionals who were taught and inspired by him. He initiated and established this journal in 2013 as a simple platform to encourage doctors to communicate their unusual cases and research. Over the years, this went on to attract original research articles from all over the country and abroad. Until his last days, the issues were never devoid of his contribution or active guidance. During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, when there was an explosion of literature, it was his initiative and idea to bring out a focused issue to give concise and condensed information from all specialties to the reader. The contributions from experts from India and abroad to this dedicated special supplement were spontaneous was highly appreciated by peers. It was our proud privilege to present the supplement with his last editorial to him as he was receiving treatment in hospital.

Prof. Kakarla Subbarao will be remembered as a teacher, researcher, and a renowned Radiologist. He distinguished himself in every area he worked and enhanced dignity of every chair he occupied. So much was his passion and dedication to teaching radiology that while fighting the pain in his last days, he was on webinars teaching the nuances of diagnostic radiology to the young doctors. A noteworthy achievement which current senior doctors will now undoubtedly recall is his introduction and setting the standards of modern postgraduate education as the director of Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), Hyderabad. He systematically put to practice the valuable experience, gained as a faculty in teaching institutes in USA and established metrices of academic performance. He played a pivotal role in the transition of an orthopedic hospital to an institute capable of achieving excellence in training, teaching and research. His motivational inspiration, authoritative leadership and a constant zest for achieving excellence were essentially the key factors which brought out the best in everyone in working toward creating a centre of excellence. He was a towering personality amongst his peers yet constantly adorned the attire of simplicity and modesty. Known to be was always approachable, a thorough gentleman, loved and admired by everyone who worked and interacted with him.

Awards and honors came in plenty in his lifetime including Padmashree in 2000 and he will be counted amongst those who added stature and brought respect to these awards.

We will all sadly miss the smiling face of Prof. Kakarla – the radiologist, the teacher and the gentleman.
